New York, London 5th December 2012: HarperCollins today announced a world English language deal for six books with the prestigious international best-selling thriller writer, Wilbur Smith. The deal was brokered by agent Kevin Conroy Scott of Tibor Jones and Associates, with Daniel Mallory, Vice President and Executive Editor at William Morrow in the US, and Kate Elton, Publisher, and Katie Espiner, Publishing Director at HarperFiction in the UK.
Wilbur Smith is a master story-teller and has been a hugely successful internationally bestselling author for nearly half a century. Global sales of his 33 bestselling books stand in excess of 122 million copies. He instantly attracted legions of devoted fans with his gripping debut thriller, When the Lion Feeds; went on to write such classic adventures as The Sunbird and Elephant Song; and has kept millions of readers enthralled right up to his latest edge-of-your-seat novel, Those in Peril.
The first book to be published with HarperCollins will be a sequel to River God, which has sold more than approximately 4 million copies around the world, with an estimated 2.5 million of those in English. The novel is scheduled for Christmas 2014, and will mark 50 years in Wilbur Smith’s legendary career. Smith will then publish up to two novels a year, some pairing him with carefully selected co-authors.
Said Smith: “I’ve been associated with Macmillan for over 45 years. I’d like to thank them for their continued commitment to my backlist and I look forward to continuing to work with them as they publish my next novel, Vicious Circle in 2013. For the past few years my fans have made it very clear that they would like to read my novels and revisit my family of characters faster than I can write them. For them, I am willing to make a change to my working methods so the stories in my head can reach the page more frequently. It’s exciting to think that the dynamic team at HarperCollins will enable my fans to enjoy the gems from my story vault for many years to come.’
Brian Murray, President and CEO, HarperCollins Worldwide, said: “I’m both personally and professionally delighted to welcome Wilbur Smith to the HarperCollins family. As one of the best-loved authors in the world with a truly international legion of fans, Wilbur Smith is the type of author where HarperCollins can grow audience and sales through its world class platforms, capabilities and publishing professionals. From the most innovative sales and marketing programs, to the application of proprietary pricing algorithms and analytics to state-of-the-art global print and digital distribution platforms, HarperCollins is excited to exercise its global capabilities and creative teams to make Wilbur Smiths next books his most read books.”
Victoria Barnsley, CEO and Publisher, HarperCollins UK and International, said: “Adventure and epic story-telling will never lose their appeal and it is a huge privilege to welcome one of the world’s masters to HarperCollins. Wilbur Smith is already a truly global brand and our offices across the world from Sydney, to Delhi, to Cape Town are looking forward to continuing to delight his existing loyal readers and also to introducing him to a whole new legion of fans.”
