Sarah Bilston was born in Suffolk and attended University College London and Oxford University, where she completed her D.Phil. Her first work of fiction was Bed Rest. She also published a book on Victorian literature, The Awkward Age in Women’s Popular Fiction, 1850-1900: Girls and The Transition to Womanhood, 1850-1900, with OUP.
