Rules

Entrants for the prize must have completed a novel, written in, or translated into English. The fiction can embrace any genre, but the story and the writing should be distinctive and absorbing.

The chair of the judges will be novelist Amit Chaudhuri, Professor of Contemporary Literature at UEA, who will be joined by Arvind Krishna Mehrotra, the poet, translator and critic, Urvashi  Butalia, the publisher and author, Jon Cook, Professor of Literature at UEA,  and the journalist Amana Fontanella-Khan.  Tibor Jones & Associates are dedicated to building the careers of exceptional writers, working closely with them to develop and present their manuscripts to the right publishers. With this combined knowledge the Tibor Jones South Asia Prize hopes to uncover exciting new talent.

The winner will receive literary representation plus  Rs 1 lakh (approx £1,400), and will be announced in New Delhi on Wednesday, January 18th, 2012.

The Rules:

  1. Entries for the 2012 Tibor Jones South Asia Prize can be submitted from Wednesday August 3rd 2011 until Wednesday 19th October 2011. Any novel submitted after the deadline will not be eligible for entry.
  2. Entrants must submit the completed or close to be completed novel, written in English, as well as a covering letter and a CV to the listed email address. All submissions must be made via email.
  3. The competition is open to writers from South Asia (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Maldives, Burma/Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan). There is no restriction on theme or style.
  4. Writers with existing representation by a literary agent are not eligible.
  5. The winning novel must not have been published in its entirety. If you enter your novel in other competitions and you win, please notify us and withdraw your submission.
  6. A shortlist will be announced on 15th December 2011.
  7. We reserve the right to disqualify any entry if we have reasonable grounds to believe that the entrant has breached any of these rules.
  8. We cannot accept any responsibility for any damage, loss, injury or disappointment suffered by any entrant entering the competition.
  9. We will act in accordance with current UK data protection legislation in relation to your personal data. All personal data entered is secure.
  10. We reserve the right to amend these rules where it is deemed necessary to do so or where circumstances are beyond our control. Any changes to the rules will be posted on the Tibor Jones website. We reserve the right to not award the first prize, where circumstances are beyond our control, or if the judges’ overall verdict is that the level of entries is not up to the required standard for publication.
  11. Submission of entry is taken to be an unqualified acceptance of these rules.
  12. Entrants to the prize will be encouraged to apply for the Charles Pick Fellowship at the University of East Anglia, starting Autumn 2012. The fellowship includes a cash award of £10,000 and six months board on campus at UEA, Norwich, UK. The deadline for entries is January 20th, 2012.
